MAPLE SYRUP/BUTTER

Maple syrup must be put in 250 ml kent jugs which may be picked up at the fair office for $2.50 each.
Maple butter must be put in a 500ml glass jar which may be picked up at the fair office for $2.50 each.

NOTE:  Maple syrup, Butter and any other entries must be a 2024 product.  A colorimeter will be available the evening that entries are received so that syrup may be entered in the proper section.  Everyone should use the colorimeter provided so that all entries are judged equally.  There may be a slight difference from our colorimeter and the one you have.  The committee will not be responsible for placing the exhibit in the proper section.  Detailed judging sheets for each entry will be available upon request from Committee members.  Exhibitors will receive their own judging sheet for their exhibit entry when exhibits are picked up after 5:30pm Sunday night. 

PRIZE MONEY:  Sections 1 to 7 inclusive:  1st – $15.00; 2nd – $12.00; 3rd – $10.00; 4th – $8.00; 5th – $6.00

1.   Maple Syrup, Golden/Delicate Taste.

2.  Maple Syrup, Amber/Rich Taste.

3.  Maple Syrup, Dark/Robust Taste.

4.  Maple Syrup First Time Exhibitors Only.  Note:  For those people who have never entered Maple Syrup in the Renfrew Fair before, enter your best bottle of syrup regardless of colour.  This does not eliminate you from entering in the other Maple Syrup sections.

5.  Maple Butter/Cream

6.  Soft Maple Sugar Candy

7.  Maple Sugar, hard block (must be 100% pure maple product)

The award is given to the person with the most points combined from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places and 5th place finishes from all sections

Points will be awarded as follows:

MAPLE SYRUP (Section 1-4)

COLOUR – 20  Entries entered in the correct section will be judged. Entries in the wrong section will be disqualified.

CLARITY – 10  Maple syrup should be crystal clear, points deducted for unclear syrup.

DENSITY – 30

FLAVOUR – 40 Pleasing maple flavour, one that only comes from the sap of a maple tree (and only when the sap is properly handled and processed).

MAPLE BUTTER/CREAM (Section 5)

Package – 10 Points awarded based upon sanitation and attractiveness and proper packaging.

Appearance – 20 Points awarded based upon colour, lack of separation and freedom from air bubbles.

Texture – 30 Points awarded based upon hardness and crystallinity.

Flavour – 40 Points Pleasing maple flavour that is characteristic and distinctive.

TOTAL POINTS – 100

SOFT MAPLE SUGAR CANDY (Section 6)

Package – 10 Points awarded based upon sanitation and attractiveness of packaging.

Appearance – 20 Points awarded based upon the absence of white areas, good form, light colour and lack of separation.

Texture – 30 Points awarded based upon hardness and crystallinity and smooth surface.

Flavour – 40 Points Pleasing maple flavour that is characteristic and distintive.

TOTAL POINTS – 100

MAPLE SUGAR HARD BLOCK (Section 7)

Block must meet minimum dimensions of 5″ X 3″ x 1 1/2″

Package – 10 Points awarded based upon sanitation and attractiveness of packaging.

Appearance – 20 Points awarded based upon the absence of white areas, good form, light colour and lack of separation.

Texture – 30 Points awarded based upon hardness and crystallinity and smooth surface.

Flavour – 40 Points Pleasing maple flavour that is characteristic and distintive.

TOTAL POINTS – 100

HONEY – CLASS 29A
